We stand outside of Buffy's house. I know she is nervous about this, but I kiss her lightly before she knocks on the door. Joyce opens it and stares. I guess if I saw my 4 month pregnant daughter and the boyfriend from hell I thought I'd run off, I'd stare too.

"Hi, Mom." she says, before walking in, pulling me behind her.

"Buffy. Anne. Summers. What does this mean!" her voice hits a higher note on each word. I wince. Buffy seems calm now.

"Mom, I am 4 months pregnant, and Angel is the father. I know how much you don't like him but--"

"Don't like him!?!?! He is bad for you Buffy! I don't know how, but he's even managed to get you pregnant!" Joyce looks mightily pissed.

"Mom, if you'd shut up and just listen and quit trying to run my life--" Buffy begins.

"I'm doing what's best for you! I'm telling you to give up the baby after it's born and break off all relations with Angel."

"Not gonna happen, Mom." I can see Buffy's eyes glisten and I know she's about to break down. "We're getting married after the baby is born and there's nothing you can do about it."

"Oh, yes there is. I do not want to have anything to do with you, the baby, or Angel from now on."

Buffy looks like she's been slapped and I pull her close and feel a growl begin in my chest. We turn, neither of us saying anything and leave. Buffy starts to cry the minute we're out the door. I can't do anything but hold her as she sobs.

I curse softly as the phone rings in Giles' apartment. He's letting us stay in the guest bedroom until we find an apartment. I slide gentley out from next to Buffy and go to answer the insistant ringing.

"Hello?" I snapp impatiently, but quietly, hoping not to wake anyone.

"Angel."

It's Joyce. I feel anger rise in my heart. How dare she call, after yelling at Buffy like that. I think she went just a bit overboard.

"I, I want to appolygize for what I said earlier. It was, it was selfish and I didn't bother to think about what I said. I know Buffy's probably asleep, but I just couldn't until I said this. I, I know that you and Buffy have something that's is very precious. I think, Angel, that I was jealous of what you have. Now, though it took me a few hours, I think I've come to my senses. Please, forgive me and tell Buffy that you and she are welcome anytime in my house and I'll do anything I can to help."

I listen to Joyce quietly. I can hardly believe what I'm hearing. I smile, Buffy will be glad to know that her mom's finally matured.

"Joyce, I'm glad to hear it. Why don't you come to Giles' tomorrow and we can all make plans and talk." I say, trying to be friendly. I still feel a bit indignant, but I'll learn to like her. We say good-bye and I hang up the phone.

I return to bed to find Buffy stirring. I crawl in next to her and pull her close and tell her what the phone call was about. Buffy smiles, happily, but still half asleep. I kiss her forehead softly and currle around her, falling asleep thinking about tomorrow.
